Africa must thrive to protect its biodiversity
Lazarus Sauti
The African continent is endowed with a rich diversity of life form which
provides ecosystem services such as food, medicine energy sources and building
and craft materials as well as spiritual, cultural and visual or artistic
services.
More so, the biodiversity of mother Africa regulates climate, soil
fertility, outbreaks of pests and diseases and maintains functional ecosystem.
Accordingly, Africa should strive to protect her biodiversity and in the
process harness it to transform economically, culturally, technologically and
spiritually.
This is so because biodiversity points countries within and across the
continent towards the future.
National Geography photographer, Frans Lanting once said, “Biodiversity
starts in the distant past and it points towards the future.”
Thus, by protecting her biodiversity, the continent is positioning herself
to effectively benefit from her resources and to transform economically.
To effectively protect biodiversity, the continent should stop
deforestation and land degradation; veld (wild) fires and loss of habitat.
This means that Africans should be responsible and plant more indigenous
tress for the benefit of the continent. Planting more local indigenous trees is
also crucial to the expansion of the continent.
Policy decision makers in the environment fraternity must promote
sustainable utilisation of natural resources.
African governments should therefore make sure that mining and road
construction activities are not posing threats to the ecosystem and
biodiversity.
Furthermore, governments have critical roles to play in protecting the
continent’s biodiversity by supporting projects and programmes that are
initiated to tackle problems affecting Africa’s biodiversity.
All African countries must also implement environmental policies that
protect the ecosystem and biodiversity. They must endorse the United Nations
Convention on Biological Diversity and religiously domesticate some provisions
of the convention in their legislation.
Honestly, the development of the continent is good but it should not cost
Africans a good biodiversity. Therefore, Africa must strive to protect her
biodiversity.
