Elimination of transport barriers critical for Africa

Zimbabwe’s Vice President Joyce Mujuru said the Southern African Development Community
needs to fast track the elimination of transport barriers and the streamlining of customs administration processes as a way of promoting intra-regional trade within the region.

Dr Obert Mpofu the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Development read a speech on behalf of Mujuru at the official opening of the SADC Committee of Ministers Responsible for Transport and Meteorology in Victoria Falls from October 14 to October 16.

In the speech, Mujuru said the elimination of transport barriers was critical to economic development of countries within the SADC region.

“SADC should eliminate transport barriers as an effective way of promoting intra-regional trade,” notes VP Mujuru.

She added, “The harmonisation of transport regulations is significant to promote trade and tourism.”

Remmy Makumbe, SADC Secretariat Director for Infrastructure and Services shares the same sentiments and says member countries should work together to ensure reliable infrastructure in the region.

He remarked, “There is need for member countries to work together in the implementation of the SADC regional development master plan whose objectives are to ensure a reliable and sound infrastructure.”

Last year, the SADC committee of Ministers Responsible for Transport and Meteorology agreed on the need to enter into bilateral arrangements to rectify safety deficiencies identified by the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

This move was part of efforts to improve the transport sector in countries within the SADC region.
