Communities should support Public Libraries

Public libraries are essential to communities since they promote a democratic society, which is a sum total of man’s happiness and awareness. They are often cherished community centres that play a vital role in people’s lives. Public libraries are contact with the social, political and intellectual life of a community. Furthermore, public libraries are places where people can read books, magazines, newspapers and conduct research activities for free.

Communities should support these institutions (public libraries) because they improve literacy race. They serve an important means of encouraging people to read. Reading helps people to improve their reasoning, vocabulary and overall cognitive functioning. In other words, public libraries foster academic and psychological development of individuals or groups at all educational levels.

Public libraries enable less privileged children to access information resources at reasonable cost. Toddlers can go to the library to be introduced to the world of books. Children who are just learning to read can take out books that are age-appropriate and capture their interests.

Public libraries can serve as community meeting places. Many public libraries offer additional activities besides the opportunities to read books. Use of public libraries encourages active use of leisure and recreational time. They can as well serve as polling stations.

Local teachers can assign reading material and be assured that children have access to it. Teenagers can get help from librarians with projects and research papers.

Public libraries can also serve as a critical resource for job seekers. Librarians are taught how to find and manage information. They can show job seekers how to prepare CVs and search for jobs online.

Since public libraries are economic development tools, they should have necessary information resources. These materials should be acquired by fees paid up by members of the community. In short, communities should pay annual subscription fees. These fees should contribute for the upkeep, facelift of the libraries and payment of wages for the library staff.

Communities should donate books to public libraries and submit research papers that motivate the community to do more research as a way of supporting the ultimate growth of public information – Lazarus Sauti.
