Let’s guard our wetlands jealously

Many Zimbabweans do not appreciate the importance of protecting our wetlands, arguably the most important topic in the battle to preserve our environment.

It is painful to watch wetlands around our beautiful country being destroyed for short-term gains.

Whether it is due to greed, carelessness or just plain ignorance, the Zimbabwean authorities seem to turn a blind eye to the destruction of every aspect of our green belts.

The country has lost sight of our open green spaces.

Ultimately, the problems of water shortages we are facing as a country are also caused by the destruction of these wetlands.

For crying out loud, we need our wetlands to ensure the availability of clean drinking water for current and future generations.

Wetlands store water in the dry season and they also prevent flooding in the wet season.

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources should ensure the protection of wetlands from vultures that are destroying them at a faster rate for personal gains.

The Environmental Management Agency should also stamp its authority against these unscrupulous organisations.

The country and the general citizenry need to jealously guard any existing wetlands because if these are destroyed, it will be a case of “no wetlands - no water.”

Let's all work together to protect our wetlands - Lazarus Sauti.
