Public relations involves good deeds

With the rise in air, water and other forms of pollution in Harare, residents need to be informed and educated about dangers of environmental pollution and how they can help to keep the environment clean.

Pollution is not only harmful to humans but to animals too.

Thus, due to environmental pollution in Harare, residents are in danger of succumbing to opportunist infections.

This threatens the physical well being of human life and that of the ecosystem.

Environmental pollution is a serious issue not only in Harare but also worldwide.

The problem in Zimbabwe is that it is not getting the adequate media attention it deserves. Therefore, it is the duty of public relations (PR) practioners in various organisations to raise awareness of this problem.

The role of PR practioners’ is not only confined to maintaining the image of their respective organisations but to maintain the image of our country too.

Since the role of the media is to inform and educate, PR practitioners should use the media in controlling environmental pollution.

They should always remember that good public relations involve good deeds.

This involves being the voice of the voiceless environment.

As custodians of information, PR practitioners should spread awareness to the public using various media channels about the hazardous effect of pollution on human beings, so that people will realize the consequences and stop polluting.

It is also the role of PR practitioners to conscientise the public on the need to maintain a clean environment.

For example, members of the public should be told that water conservation complements a clean environment.

Public relations practitioners should highlight that polluting water sources not only results in dwindling amounts of water but also pollutes the environment.
