Invest in environmental conservation: EMA

Lazarus Sauti

The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has urged health institutions to invest in environmental conservation to enable them to maintain an environment that is healthy for the patients.

After experiencing challenges that emanated from operations on solid disposal and sewage waste management at St Lukes Hospital, EMA engaged the health institution to work out mechanisms aimed at creating a clean environment for the patients.

This has seen the hospital sourcing funds to construct a new incinerator and sewage pond.

Speaking during a media tour at St Lukes Hospital in Lupane, EMA Provincial Manager for Matabeleland North, Mrs Chipo Mpofu-Zuze urged health institutions to invest in environmental conservation for sustainable development.

The Environmental Management Agency is a statutory body responsible for ensuring the sustainable management of natural resources and protection of the environment; the prevention of pollution and environmental degradation; and the preparation of Environmental Plans for the management and protection of the environment.

It was established under the Environmental Management Act [Chapter 20:27] and inacted in 2002
