Road infrastructure key to Zim’s socio-economic transformation
Lazarus Sauti
Transport
and Infrastructural Development minister, Honourable Architect Joel Biggie
Matiza said road infrastructure is the vein that pumps the economy.
He added
that extensive network of high-quality road infrastructure is, therefore, a key pillar in unlocking Zimbabwe’s socio-economic
potential.
“Road infrastructure is a
lasting investment that has an immense socio-economic impact in the development
matrix of any country,” he said. “It sustains economic development
not only in Zimbabwe but the world over.”
Honourable Architect Matiza also said that
improving road infrastructure in Zimbabwe will considerably enhance the
transportation of goods, boost tourism, facilitate transactions, as well as positively
impact ordinary lives in various ways, for instance making sure that people get
to clinics and hospital quickly during emergencies.
Sharing the same sentiments, researchers Eva
Ivanova and Jana Masarova noted in their journal article titled “Importance of road infrastructure in the
economic development and competitiveness”, that extensive network of high-quality roads is necessary
for trouble-free road transport.
“Road transport is widely-used to carry people, raw
materials, semi-finished, and finished products intended for sale in most developing
nations,” added Ivanova and Masarova.
Honourable Architect Matiza said the Government,
through the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development, has stepped
up the construction, upgrading and rehabilitation of roads in the country to enhance the transportation of goods, boost up
tourism and facilitate transactions.
He also underlined that construction
works, which are already underway on various major roads in the country, are in
line with Vision 2030, which seeks to transform Zimbabwe into an Upper-Middle
Income Economy.
“We
are working tirelessly to transform Zimbabwe’s road network to world-class standards
to attain the vision of making our country an Upper-Middle Income Economy by
the year 2030,” Honourable Architect
Matiza said.
“The
Government is moving with speed to rehabilitate the Beitbridge-Bulawayo-Victoria
Falls Highway, the Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway, and the Kanyemba-Mt
Darwin Highway.”
He
added that traffic volumes along the Beitbridge-Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Highway,
which connects travellers with the country’s busiest border post, as well as the
tourist destination of Victoria Falls, is always high, hence prioritisation of the
upgrading and rehabilitation.
“So
far we have awarded the tender to dualise the Beitbridge-Bulawayo-Victoria
Falls Highway to a South African company called Khato Civils and South Zambezi Joint
Venture and the company is now in the process of mobilising finances,” Hon. Matiza said.
He
also said that the Department of Roads is currently using local resources to rehabilitate,
widen and dualise the 583km-Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway.
“The
Department of Roads has already started work on the first 10km in Beatrice and
another 10km is also under construction in Chivhu,” said Hon. Matiza.
He
also said the Kanyemba-Mt Darwin Highway, which connects the region via
Mozambique is already under construction.
“Works
have already started at the 34km peg from Mahuwe towards Kanyemba. Through
funds from the Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (Zinara), a parastatal
responsible for the management, maintenance and development of the country’s
national road network, and other partners, the Government is keen to revamp all
roads in the country to meet world-class benchmarks,” he said.
Commissioning the US$20 million bankrolled
Tanganda-Ngundu Road which links Manicaland and Masvingo Provinces via Chiredzi
and also connects the Eastern Highlands to South Africa at Kondo Business
Centre in Chipinge recently, His Excellency, President Emmerson Dambudzo
Mnangagwa praised Zinara for being active on the ground providing funding for
refurbishing national roads.
“We
are now self-assured that we can refurbish our national roads using money
generated locally, thanks to Zinara,” said President Mnangagwa.
