I want to be big – Andy Muridzo

The big thing is that you know what you want. This quote by Earl Nightingale, who was a respected American radio personality, writer, speaker and author, is pushing upcoming artists, Andy Muridzo, to be the next big thing in Zimbabwean music circles.

With eight singles and an eight track album titled ‘Pakubuda Kwezuva’ released early this year under his belt, Muridzo is already making shockwaves in the music industry.

“The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be. I am destined to be the next big thing in Zimbabwean music circles and I am working towards that goal,” he told The Southern Times.

Muridzo also believes that he is an advisor since his music carries social commentary.

“Everyone in life has a purpose. As an advisor is social circles, my purpose in life is to use my music to explore various issues affecting society today.

“For instance, in my latest single featuring Jairos Chabvonga titled “Ngaituruke”, I am exploring the issue of climate change and pleading with the authorities in the country to revisit the issue of traditional knowledge systems such as mukwerera (rainmaking ceremony), and ask for rain,” he said.

Muridzo added: “Taking the role of a counsellor, I also sing to give guidance as well as spread love. Remember, love is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own.”

With his voice and beats similar to Jah Prayzah’s, the young artist said he is Prayzah’s protégé as he was inspired by the Jerusarema hit maker to start writing music as well as follow in his tracks.

I started writing music after Jah Prayzah took me under his arm in 2013. He is the one who encouraged me to start writing songs and follow in his tracks,” said the talented mbira player.

He added: I am not a copycat, but someone inspired by Jah Prayzah. In fact, I wanted to sing Rhythm and Blues as well as Zim dancehall, but Jah advised me to follow the genre he mastered, Jerusarema.

Muridzo’a manager, Simbarashe Norman Nyaunga says they are determined to make their indelible mark in the history of music in Zimbabwe.

“We have a dream, and our dream is to contribute immensely to the development of music in this country. We are strong-minded to make our dream a reality.

“It is determination that gives us the resolve to keep going in spite of the roadblocks that lay before us,” he said.

Nyaunga added: “Muridzo’s quest to be the next big thing in music circles in not in vain. His music has already been accepted.

“He is now working towards releasing a 10-track album in early next year.”

The 23 year old Muridzo was born in Bulawayo, and moved to Murehwa where he grew up.
