Masturbation

Masturbation refers to the stimulation or manipulation of one’s genitals, especially to orgasm; sexual gratification. Masturbation = Imagination + Activity. To masturbate is to imagine: physically (Mokokoma Mokhonoana, Author and Social Critic).

Causes which incite young men to undertake masturbation:

  • Bad company; peer pressure.
  • House servants also incite young boys to this vice by playing with their sexual organs.
  • Pornography; and excessive use of stimulating diets such as meat, eggs, tea, etc.

 Side-effects of Masturbation

  • Fatigue - feeling tired all the time.
  • Lower back pain and testicular pain.
  • Sexual disorder; soft or weak erections; and premature ejaculation.
  • The person dislikes any company and activities and rather likes to sit in seclusion and suffers.
  • Shame and guilt and anxiety. These effects can manifest into things like headaches, back pain, or chronic pain).

What does the Bible say about this? Is it a sin?

1 Chronicle 6:18; Matthew 5:28-29; Ephesians 5:3; 1 Thessalonians 4:2-8; 1 Corinthians 6:18; 1 Peter 2:11; James 1:14-15; Genesis 38:9-10; James 1:13-14; Galatians 5:19-21;

Can you, in all honesty, masturbate without sinning against the clear commands of Christ? In our society, where lust is in the air, how is it possible to ‘learn to control our bodies in a way that is holy and honourable’?

As for whether masturbation is a sin or not, understanding the definition of sin can help us make that determination. One of the definitions of sin is ‘to miss the mark’ (Vine’s Expository Dictionary). Since masturbation misses the mark of what God intends for us, it is sin.

Is masturbation right or wrong?

God created sex to be enjoyable, and He clearly teaches that sex belongs in marriage, not outside of it. Sex is intended to be a pleasurable act shared between a husband and a wife. It forms a ‘pleasure bond,’ as some have described it, that helps emotionally unite the two people.

When you contrast that with masturbation (which is strictly for the pleasure of one person, whether male or female) it is obvious masturbation is outside of God’s intent. It focuses on pleasing the self instead of a mate and is not the use of sex that brings the best long-term results in our lives. Empty your pants pockets, and throw away all your masturbation. Love someone other than yourself (Jarod Kintz, Author).

Conclusion

Masturbation is unhealthy. The Bible warns against lovers of themselves and masturbation would be considered loving oneself in an unhealthy way. Masturbation can hurt one’s sex life in a marriage. Sex is supposed to be between a man and wife together, if one masturbates, it takes that special need away from his/her partner.

Romans 6:13 (NIV) says: “Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness.
